Fantasy football is a great way to let off steam, believe us. Some of the best fantasy players in the league are in the East and we’ve got the scoop on which teams to watch next year. Keep your Clearwire internet on during playoffs – you’re going to want to make notes.
Carolina Panthers: Everyone’s dream quarterback Cam Newton will be back next year for a fresh start. Averaging over 30 fantasy points a game Cam’s a great pick for anyone interested in flying under the radarNOT!
Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons have had a sloppy finish this year but that doesn’t mean they should be discounted. They’re likely to get a pretty good draft pick next year and they’re always a breeding ground for underreported talent so look out for a wide receiver or running back of note.
Tampa Bay Bucs: If Tampa Bay doesn’t move (kidding!) they’re going to have an uphill battle next year. The good news is that makes them an easy pick for fantasy players in the draft and when these boys are on they’re really, really on.

Since riding one of the best defenses in NFL history to a Super Bowl win in 2001, the Baltimore Ravens have been synonymous with bone-crushing defense. Although many of its standout players from the years since have come and gone, defense is still the Ravens’ hallmark, and there is enough left that the Ravens should still compete for a division title in 2011.

The soul of the Baltimore defense is linebacker Ray Lewis, entering his sixteenth NFL season. The brain of the defense is strong safety Ed Reed, always a big-play threat down the middle of the field.Want more? Click here/tag The Baltimore defensive line is anchored by stalwarts Haloti Ngata and Terrell Suggs, two of the best in the business at their positions.

The Ravens were disappointed not to land all-world cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha in the offseason, and the degree to which this defense dominates will likely hinge on its cornerback play. The Ravens used a first-round pick on a cornerback, Jimmy Smith, who will see lots of playing time and possibly will even start. If the other corners hold up and play well, the team is so loaded with playmakers in its front seven that it can shut down any offense.

After a 2-14 season, the Carolina Panthers let go of the only coach that’s ever brought them to the Super Bowl, John Fox, and brought in head coaching rookie Ron Rivera. The team’s terrible record also gave it the top pick in the NFL draft, with which the Panthers selected Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton out of Auburn. Last year, Jimmy Clausen gave no indication that he’ll ever be a competent NFL starter, and the team also brought in Derek Anderson, who has clearly shown himself to be nothing more than a backup. Is this new to you? Catch up here

So essentially, the starting quarterback job is Cam Newton’s to lose, and with one preseason game to go, the team has yet to announce who will start the season opener under center. Newton has the strength of a linebacker, the speed of a big wide receiver, and NFL-caliber arm strength. The physical tools are there, and then some. The issues are decision-making and accuracy. In college, Newton was able to take off running at the first sign of pressure or good coverage, and could almost always make a play. That will not be possible so often in the NFL, and Newton will need to adjust his game.

Among residents of the football-crazy state of Florida, there is competition for bragging rights over which of the state’s three NFL teams is the best. Heading into 2011, the competition is close among the three, but hardly fierce. It’s not as if this is the state of Pennsylvania, where it looks as if both the Eagles and Steelers both have legitimate Super Bowl hopes. The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off an 8-8 year, and the Miami Dolphins are coming off a year where they lost their final three games to finish 7-9. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were clearly the best team in Florida last year, finishing with a surprising 10-6 record and making it to the playoffs.

In 2011, it’s hard to imagine anything more than continued mediocrity for Jacksonville and Miami. Each has a less-than-stellar quarterback situation and a reasonably physical defense that can keep the team in games. The difference for Tampa is that they have a rapidly developing young quarterback in Josh Freeman. If Freeman can take another step forward from an excellent year in 2010, he’ll keep the Bucs moving forward, and they will stay head and shoulders above their Florida neighbors for the foreseeable future.

People doubted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when they drafted Josh Freeman in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft with the 17th pick. He had all the physical skills to be a great NFL quarterback but people doubted his ability to be a leader and manage an NFL game. The Tampa Bay coaching staff saw something in him that others did not and that intuition has paid off for them in spades since then. He had his first start against the Green Bay Packers in November of his rookie year. The Buccaneers won the game and it set off an 11 game winning streak that carried in to the next season.

In his second season Tampa Bay went 10-6 and narrowly missed a playoff berth. Things are only looking better as Josh Freeman combines his size, athleticism and newly found leadership skills to hopefully make his team even better this year. One of the most positive things about Freeman is his durability. He was one of the only quarterbacks in the NFL last year to start all 16 games for his team. This kind of continuity will only help Tampa Bay win more games. They do play in a touch division with New Orleans and Atlanta having great teams in the NFC South. But, a wild card berth is not out of the question for this young team with an extremely bright future thanks to the quick development of their young star quarterback. He was a Pro Bowl alternate in his rookie year and it looks like he could be at that caliber for many years to come for the Buccaneers. If you like what you see, keep going: 2011 NFL Predictions: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Playoff Bound?
